YES!

"Learn to say 'no' to the good so you can say 'yes' to the best" (John Maxwell).

There are times in our journey when it is essential that we intentionally voice our “no.” On the other hand, our “yes” is just as important. "Yes," implies a willingness to accomplish things that you’ve contemplated, but perhaps did not have the time or opportunity to fulfil. Perhaps even fear set in, and therefore, you resisted the challenge.  There are seasons when our “yes” is in the flow of life, enjoying the manifestations of what these seasons bring. Also, we experience seasons when our “yes” is only for a moment. Ultimately, our "yes" should benefit others, as we also are benefiting in the process.

As I reflect on my high school years, I remember wanting to play basketball, but I lacked the experience and was a bit too timid to join the team. After graduating high school and deciding to go to college a few years later, I took the plunge and followed an inner dream by joining my college basketball team. I worked hard to know the sport and completed the season, but I determined it was not for me. All in all, my "yes" was completed, and I enjoyed each moment of learning a new skill, engaging with others, and the reward of fulfilling a goal.

During my young adult years, I found myself saying "yes" to every opportunity that came my way. Even if it was only for a season, I was secure in my "yes". Some opportunities were beneficial, and others flopped. I never complained because I knew that the Lord was with me even when things did not work out. I also knew that there was a lesson to be learned from every opportunity. So, I looked for the lesson in the experience, rather than complaining about my weaknesses or the unknown. I always moved on to the next thing, knowing that a greater opportunity was ahead.

I’ll never forget a season when I was asked to teach in a homeschool co-op. I was in seminary, homeschooling my kids, and experienced bouts of depression, although still productive. It was one of the most difficult seasons for me, and I made every excuse as to why I couldn’t say yes at that time. I had met many wonderful people who were like-minded and who understood my life at the time. Although I said “no” the first time I was asked, another opportunity was extended to me a year later, and in this season, God used my children to say, “Mom, you can do what these moms are doing.” Ha!! I put on my momma shoes, prayed, and said an affirmative "yes," and God’s blessings followed me.

2 Corinthians 1:20 says, “For all the promises of God in Him are 'Yes', and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” This verse speaks of God’s work in His people. He is the "YES" in all we do. In His "yes", there is salvation in Christ Jesus, sanctification, being set apart to walk in His promises, fellowship with like-minded people, experiencing His everlasting love, joy, peace, goodness, forgiveness, hope, heaven, and more! We don’t have to second-guess what He provides. As we walk purposefully, we are blessed. He is the "Yes" of all possibilities! The “Amen” in His “yes” signifies closure and affirmation. What God says has been completed. His “Amen” has been fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Therefore, we rest in His promises and live for His glory, honor, and praise.

Are you struggling to find your “yes” in life? Do you have the peace of God as you walk purposefully in helping others? Are you taking advantage of all the great opportunities presented to you?  Are you delaying your “yes” when now is the time to make it a reality?
